Celebrating Nigeria’s Independence ✨🇳🇬✨

Happy 63rd Independence Day to Nigeria! On October 1, 1960 Nigeria became independent form Britain.

Udemé is Nigerian-American. Her mother is from Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria so this day is very special to her. In 2017 her Aunty asked her to create a painting of the Nigerian flag for an event she was co-hosting. Honored and up for the challenge; Udemé started the painting right away. However, she didn’t finish in time for the presentation. She continued to work on the piece. Ever since it has become one of her most cherished and favorite creations. (It’s not for sale 😊)

Fun facts:

🇳🇬The flag has three vertical bands of green, white, and green. The two green stripes represent natural wealth, and the white represents peace and unity.🇳🇬

The flag is an adaptation of the winning entry from Michail Taiwo Akinkunmi (a Taurus ♉️) in 1959. Akinkunmi was a 23-year-old student at the time he designed the flag. He was studying at Norwood Technical College in London, England when he saw an advertisement in a newspaper that they were accepting submissions for the design of a new national flag of Nigeria. Akinkunmi's original submission was different. It had a red radiating sun badge in the central white vertical band with a green vertical band on each side. After the badge was removed by the judges, the flag has remained unchanged. It was first officially used on 1 October 1960, the day Nigeria was granted independence from the United Kingdom.
